Samba de Gafieira is a partner dance that originated in early 20th century in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It emerged from rhythms of African origin, such as lundu and batuque, and is connected to the ancestry of the larger Afro-Brazilian community. Samba de gafieira can be danced to various types of music, such as bossa nova, choro, MPB (“Música Popular Brasileira”), pagode, samba-funk and others. Like tango, it is a walking dance characterized by a close embrace.
